Not sure how to talk about complex topics? Tell a story!

I was recently listening to a presentation by the secretary general of the trade association representing the interests of the electricity industry in Europe.  He had me with his first sentence.

I am fascinated by AI, he said, and not just because it eliminates the need to send inspectors in climbing gear to rappel up and down wind turbine blades.  Inspectors now send drones with AI tools, eliminating some of the costly, time-consuming and dangerous manual inspections needed to keep wind farms running safely and efficiently. AI fascinates me because it is the most transformative technology I have ever seen.

Visualizing technology in action

The speaker could have started with a monotonous recital about the complexity of AI technology used to manage smart grids, predict consumption patterns using historical data, optimize resources and predict maintenance needs. He talked about AI doing all of these things, but it was that first image of inspectors rappelling down huge turbines that hooked my interest and kept me focused throughout his speech.

It also inspired me to write a blog about the role of AI in Europe’s shift to a new age of energy

The best way to talk about technology is to tell stories about how it benefits people. That is the most important thing I learned from my work as a communications expert for a global tech company.

In an era where technology is omnipresent, its rapid advancements and widespread applications can often feel overwhelming. However, telling stories about technology can bridge the gap between complexity and comprehension, making intricate concepts accessible and engaging for everyone.

Weaving narratives around technology

Narratives help people visualize technology in action, which can enhance understanding and retention. Here are some more reasons why it makes sense to weave narratives around technology.

Stories can

  • vividly demonstrate how technology is applied in various scenarios, helping people see its value and potential in real-world contexts
  • demonstrate relevance, showing how technology can solve specific problems or improve lives
  • inspire others to explore and adopt new technologies
  • humanize complexities, making them more relatable and understandable
  • build trust and credibility by showing the positive impact and ethical considerations of technological advancements
  • spark curiosity, drive innovation, and encourage adoption by showcasing what’s possible
